Lobbyists are frantically pushing for the restoration in the fiscal 2012 federal budget of numerous cuts made to the 2011 budget. Millions of dollars were cut from key initiatives, including transportation projects. Advocates believe the drop in funding will create unemployment and weaken an already stunted economy. "In this environment, the numbers from fiscal 2011 might be the new baseline, but our message isn't going to change," said Mike Wallace, a program director at the National League of Cities. "We're focusing on those local programs that create jobs and spur economic growth."
