Managers may be able to improve their employees just by changing their mind about the workers. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, discovered that if managers think positively about their employees and show them respect, the employees' job performance improves. "If they think of their employees negatively -- that they are conforming, insubordinate and incompetent -- they will treat them that way," said researcher Thomas Sy. "Manager beliefs about employees impact organizational outcomes."
