University of Minnesota engineering students tested the strength of their own concrete mix that included fly ash and silica fume. The students put their 6-inch concrete beam to the test: It withstood nearly 8,000 pounds per square inch before breaking, topping expectations for the beam to break when pressure hit 2,400 pounds per square inch. The students are researching concrete recipes that include varying amounts of stone aggregate, sand and cement mix.
