An investment by McDonald's in fast-growing emerging markets such as India and China is paying off: The company saw same-store sales in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa rise 5.5% in the fourth quarter, compared with a 4.4% increase in the U.S. Other franchises, such as Subway, Wendy's and Yum! Brands, also are focusing on those markets.
