A committee of education officials is recommending that New York state's education commissioner approve a waiver that will allow Dennis Walcott to become chancellor of New York City schools. Walcott, a deputy mayor who was appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to replace Cathleen Black, needs the waiver because he doesn't have educational leadership experience. However, he has master's degrees in education and social work and is seen as having close ties to Bloomberg's ongoing education agenda.
