Plastic surgeon Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh donated his services and North Shore University Hospital donated its facilities to treat a young Iraqi who suffered numerous bodily injuries, including a shattered face and loss of an arm and leg, after he unknowingly kicked a bomb. Alizadeh implanted a tissue balloon in the boy's cheek that gradually was inflated to stretch the skin before repairing a scar that ran the length of the boy's face. The charity Global Medical Relief, which organized the procedure, has arranged similar surgeries for 112 children.
