The University of North Carolina Board of Governors awarded special-education professor Diane Browder the university system's highest faculty honor. Browder pioneered teaching methods based on the premise that children with severe developmental disabilities can learn words, math and science. Browder, who teaches at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, worked with local educators to apply her concepts and developed the Early Learning Skills Builder, a reading program used in more than 800 districts.
