The infusion of antimicrobial substances in bio-based packaging applications is the latest trend in eco-friendly "active packaging," according to a study published in the Journal of Food Science. Such applications use biodegradable polymers made from polysaccharides and other protein-based materials. "Consumer demands for preservative-free, high-quality food products, packaged in materials that create less environmental impact, have inspired research into the application of biopolymeric materials," the study says.
