Malkhaz Maisashvili, a chef in the formerly Soviet republic of Georgia, has been traveling remote regions in search of little-known recipes as part of a move to revive Georgia cuisine for culinary tourists, 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union. He has collected about 150 recipes, and serves most at his Tbilisi restaurant, Puris Sakhli, popular with tourists as well as Georgians.
A bill introduced in the Florida legislature aims to help Darden Restaurants and other companies that aren't currently able to recoup all of the tax credits won under incentive deals, but not until after the 20-year incentive period expires. The parent of Red Lobster and Olive Garden was originally granted about $7.5 million in annual tax credits when it agreed to build its headquarters in Orange County, but the global recession has resulted in lower tax bills.
Several federal agencies are expected to reveal a proposal today that would ask food companies, including restaurants, to voluntarily limit advertising and marketing efforts aimed at children to products that are low in salt, fat and sugar. The guidelines would set strict parameters for what constitutes a "healthy" product.
In a reflection of American consumers' shift toward what they perceive to be healthier food offerings and the growing popularity of coffee, Starbucks beat out Burger King and Wendy's for the third place spot on Technomic's annual list of top U.S. restaurant chains by sales, behind only McDonald's and Subway. "Starbucks keeps gaining and gaining. Carrying a Starbucks cup in your hand says something about you as a person," said Technomic President Ron Paul.
Bacon-wrapped hot dogs also are called "danger dogs" by the legion of fans who have discovered the street food that started in Tijuana, Mexico. National quickservice chain Wienerschnitzel has put the danger dog on the menu, and independent eateries including CJ's All American Grill in Walnut Creek, Calif., are seeing a demand. "Most people that have tried them definitely come back and get another," said owner Drew Albert.
