Richard Palmquist was a by-the-book veterinarian whose views began to shift in the early 1980s, after a client apparently cured his dog of diabetes with a low-carb, high-protein and vegetable diet that included algae. Today, Palmquist sings the praises of algae as a supplement to help manage diabetes and other conditions, but also cautions colleagues and pet owners to avoid excess and make sure the algae comes from an unpolluted source to avoid exposure to toxins.
