Demand is growing for alkyl polyglucoside, a nonionic surfactant made from vegetable oils and starches, and is leading to advances in other sugar-based surfactants. The market for naturally derived specialty surfactants is expected to grow by 4% each year through 2013, said Anna Ibbotson, industry manager for chemicals and materials at Kline & Co.
