The U.S. nuclear energy industry has gained valuable lessons in dealing with emergencies after studying the oil sector's response to the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, according to Tony Pietrangelo, chief nuclear officer at the Nuclear Energy Institute. NEI has improved its emergency response and a communications plan after reviewing the oil industry's response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster, Pietrangelo said. NEI learned "how we would apply that to our industry if we had an event like that," he added.
