Studies presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research found an increased risk of autism in children of women who had pre-pregnancy obesity or who suffered from diabetes or a simple fever during pregnancy. In one of the studies, researchers reported a 60% higher autism risk in children born to mothers with chronic hypertension, pre-pregnancy obesity or type 2 or gestational diabetes. Unrelated clinical data found the mothers of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder were about twice as likely to report having a fever during pregnancy than the mothers of children without autism.
