The number of admissions for abuse of benzodiazepine, a class of drugs for anxiety, insomnia and seizure disorders, jumped from 22,400 in 1998 to 60,200 in 2008 among patients age 12 and older, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported. Whites, males and people ages 18 to 34 were most likely to be admitted for benzodiazepine abuse, according to the report. Researchers found that 95% of patients admitted for benzodiazepine abuse also misused other substances, with more than 75% of them using benzodiazepine as the secondary drug of abuse.
