Each 100 micrograms of folic acid from foods, including fortified grains, spinach and peas, that women ate two months before and after conception corresponded to a 13% decrease in their risk of having a baby with spina bifida, according to a study in the journal Epidemiology. But researchers found that taking folic acid supplements did not reduce the risk of delivering a baby with the birth defect. An expert who did not work on the study said the findings were based on recall and shouldn't prompt women to ignore current folic acid recommendations.
