U.S. hospitals are hiring nocturnists, subspecialists who specifically work overnight to improve quality and coordinate care when there are fewer physicians on duty. Dr. Catherine Washburn, a nocturnist at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, said she gets patients started on treatments faster, reducing patient wait times for an ICU admission from six hours to within 90 minutes of arrival.
