In 2010, David Imus won cartography's highest honor for "The Essential Geography of the United States of America," a map that he said highlights the special nature of places around the country. Imus, who discovered his love for geography in college, said he spent 5,000 hours on the project. "I see the world as this great big tapestry of different rivers and roads and landmarks and valleys and deserts that are really a fabulous work of art," he said.
