Francis Kearney, defense director for Europe at Rolls-Royce, said the company could modify a turboprop engine if it were tapped as a supplier for a medium-altitude, long-endurance drone that Dassault and BAE Systems are pitching for French and U.K. military forces. Kearney said Rolls would likely choose the RTM22 helicopter engine or another power plant from its range, and then adapt it for the MALE drone.
Sikorsky Innovations finished testing an active rotor system equipped with flaps to improve performance. "Our active flap rotor is more effective on noise and vibration than on cruise efficiency," said Russ Gray, chief engineer for advanced programs at Sikorsky. The rotor system was tested in a wind tunnel.
Regional pilot Ian Norris, 25, recognized the symptoms of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, and helped guide a general-aviation pilot of a Cirrus SR22 to safety. The general-aviation pilot, 70, handed over the controls to his wife, who flew the plane with assistance from Norris and air traffic control.
The Calhoun Air Center at Victoria Regional Airport in Texas gave a young girl and her family a free flight. Reyna Martinez, 12, enjoyed her flight as a needed break from frequent hospital visits for an illness. "It's just unexplainable. It's just a feeling that you cannot get anywhere besides being in a plane and flying," she said.
According to a new series of government tests, LightSquared's mobile broadband network led to a "significant degradation of service" on General Motors Co.'s OnStar system. LightSquared also caused interference on other GPS devices. "In our view it's time to stop squandering resources on this and find alternative spectrum for them," said James Kirkland, vice president and general counsel of Trimble Navigation Ltd., a GPS manufacturer.
