St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City has improved how it manages its inventory of pacemakers and other cardiovascular devices, along with more accurately tracking which patient gets which device, all thanks to new passive electronic product code radio frequency identification tags. Nurses scan the devices as they move out of inventory and into patients. Even if a scan is missed, a scanner at the wastebasket makes it easy to track the equipment's final destination so billing can be accurate.
