A study in the International Journal of Medical Informatics found primary care providers and specialists at a Veterans Affairs facility still rely on paper-based workarounds and have communication failures and redundancies during consultations, despite using mature electronic health record systems. Some of the workarounds, however, provide a benefit, the study found. The potential design flaws of computerized tools are highlighted in the study, which also offers insight into improving EHRs.
