A middle-school educator who began mentoring her first student-teacher last year recommends five ways in which teacher-education programs could be improved. Sarah Henchey writes that teaching colleges should invite teachers and other guest speakers to the classroom, assign targeted observation tasks and simulate in the college classroom the way in which teachers at most schools collaborate. She also suggests the colleges help trainees understand the politics of education and create meaningful partnerships with classroom teachers.
