Scratching is a natural feline activity and owners can typically prevent cats from destroying furniture and other property by keeping claws trimmed and providing scratching areas, said veterinarian Bruce Nixon, incoming chair of the AVMA Animal Welfare Committee, in a new educational video. AVMA recommends that declawing only be considered when all other methods fail or the clawing behavior carries a risk of injury or disease and reiterates AVMA's stance that veterinarians need to educate owners on their decision to declaw.
