Some Los Angeles teachers say they have been able to incorporate innovative teaching and hands-on learning in the classroom despite the focus on high-stakes standardized tests. Helping students do well on the exams while not teaching to the test takes time, commitment, organization and planning, according to teachers. Teacher Rafe Esquith said he was able to free up classroom time by including reading comprehension and vocabulary lessons across other subjects. "Teachers have to finagle the schedule," he said.
