Elementary-school principal Peter DeWitt questions in this blog post the practice of applying zero-tolerance discipline policies at the elementary level. DeWitt argues that such policies ignore the realities of many students' home lives and do not take into account common sense. School discipline should be used to teach young students how to improve or change their behavior, and zero-tolerance policies should be reserved only for the most serious cases, he writes.
