Veterinarians at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., have determined after months of wondering that giant panda Mei Xiang had failed to conceive for the fifth consecutive year, despite displaying behaviors similar to those she exhibited when she was pregnant six years ago. Research shows that pandas that experience pseudopregnancies -- showing symptoms without actually being pregnant -- for several consecutive years are more likely to be infertile.
