Veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus wrote WebMD's guidelines for handling pets with broken bones, and she advises pet owners to take extra care when transporting animals that may have broken bones, including offering tips on how to pick up a pet with a break, fashion a stretcher and a splint. Open breaks that typically result from car accidents or attacks by bigger animals are obvious, but some animals may show no signs of closed breaks that can happen when animals jump or fall from high places, said veterinarian Kelly Miller.
