Rep. Bill Flores, R-Texas, said he wants to make nuclear power more cost-effective so that utilities want to invest in the energy source. "Granted, their initial construction cost is huge. But [nuclear power] is the safest, most stable form of cheap electricity that you can produce. It allows us to let these coal plants to begin to phase out over time," Flores said. With the proper approach, the U.S. could obtain up to 80% of base-load power from nuclear facilities in three decades, he added.
