U.S. researchers have begun a five-year, federally funded study on why children in Pacific islander communities do not have healthy lifestyles, in an effort to create culturally appropriate solutions to reduce obesity rates. Alaska and Hawaii are included in the study, and Bret Luick, food and nutrition specialist at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, says the approach will be to work with communities to set up coalitions that decide what initiatives can be launched that will be successful and sustainable.
