Some districts are taking a "grow your own" approach and implementing teacher-training programs as early as middle school to recruit more classroom teachers -- particularly in critical areas such as bilingual and special education. In Connecticut, students participating in the Summer Institute for Future Teachers draft lesson plans and work with students. It's unclear whether such programs work, but results from long-running programs show that some do take jobs as teachers, guidance counselors and school social workers.
