Twitter's 140-character limit is an archaic holdover from the days of SMS messages and should be abandoned in favor of a 280-character cap, argues Farhad Manjoo. But while it's true that Twitter could use some improvements, trying to radically change the way the system works would simply confuse users, counters Mathew Ingram. "Throwing out some of the core aspects of what make Twitter useful, or cluttering it up with all kinds of other features of dubious merit doesn't really make any sense at all," Ingram writes.
