The most important part of treating an animal's broken bone is immobilizing the fracture, which can be accomplished in several ways depending on the position and complexity of the break, writes New York veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus. Fiberglass or plastic splints are often enough for simple fractures where the bones don't need realignment, but more severe breaks or fractures in spots where the bones above and below the break can't be immobilized require surgery.
