Massachusetts saw an increase from 31 cases of the tick-borne disease babesiosis in 2000 to 84 in 2010, according to the state health department. "We now know that there have probably been significantly more than a hundred cases of sickness caused by babesia transmitted by blood transfusions" in the U.S. since 1970, said Roger Y. Dodd, vice president of research and development for the American Red Cross and also a representative of AABB.
