California students continue to make modest improvements in math and English achievement, according to results of the latest standardized tests. About 54% of students scored "proficient" or above in English and 50% reached those levels in math, a jump of two percentage points over last year in both subject areas. The scores were the highest since the state began standards-based testing in 2003, but officials noted that work remains to bring more students to grade level, particularly in middle and high schools.
