A New Jersey school district will focus this fall on a co-teaching model for educating most of its students with special needs. Co-teaching, in which a special-education teacher works full-time alongside a generalist, will be used to replace collaborative-model classrooms, where special educators divided their time between multiple classrooms. Educators and school officials say the co-teaching approach is preferable because it allows special-education teachers to observe and instruct students throughout the school day, not just during lessons.
