Diabetes, smoking and obesity may be associated with brain shrinkage that causes mental decline among middle-aged people, a study in Neurology found. Participants with diabetes experienced brain shrinkage in the hippocampus faster than those who did not have the disease, while obese individuals were more likely than their leaner counterparts to be in the top 25% of participants who had faster mental decline and brain volume reduction, experts said.
