The focus on rote memorisation and repetition in China's classrooms leads students to accept that copying their teachers is appropriate and is fostering a culture of plagiarism in the country's academic community, experts say. Helen Zhang said that in two years, about 31% of submissions to her science journal in China have included high levels of copying. The revelation has some concerned that current cultural norms could hinder innovation and creativity, particularly in fields such as science.
