The development of new energy sources such as shale natural gas could help the country curb its reliance on energy imports, but could come with risks and create disputes over properties, energy experts said during the Southern Governors Association meeting in North Carolina. Proper well design can mitigate concerns about hydraulic fracturing's potential to pollute water supplies, said Richard Stoneburner, president and chief operating officer of Petrohawk Energy. According to Stoneburner's research, fracking could help unlock 120 years worth of gas supplies.
