Using low- and high-dose fluocinolone acetonide implants improved the visual acuity of patients with diabetes-related macular edema, according to a FAME trial. However, researchers found that those without the implants had a lower risk of surgery for glaucoma. Surgery was required for 3.7% of patients in low-dose group and 7.6% in high-dose group.
