The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said Monday that a new variant of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza has surfaced in China and Vietnam. The group said the mutated strain, named H5N1 -, is "able to sidestep the defenses provided by existing vaccines." Rome-based FAO added that a "major resurgence" of highly pathogenic avian influenza could occur as a result.
