Insulin pumps deliver an average of 1 to 1.4 extra units of insulin during flight take off, while drawing back insulin during descent, making management more difficult for some sensitive diabetes patients, Australian researchers reported in Diabetes Care. The study team recommends cartridges contain only 1.5 milliliters of insulin per flight. They also said disconnecting the devices during emergencies where cabin pressure drops may prevent adverse events in patients.
