Using pressure-redistribution foam mattresses in a hospital emergency department costs only 30 cents more per patient bedsore episode but could save $32 by preventing the pressure ulcers in the elderly, University of Toronto researchers reported in the Annals of Emergency Medicine. About 6% of hospital patients admitted through an ER develop bedsores within 48 hours, and the study team found that early prevention had an 82% likelihood of being cost-effective.
