The number of U.S. restaurant units declined by 9,450 last year, a 2% decline led largely by independent eateries whose ranks saw their biggest drop since NPD Group began tracking them a decade ago, according to a report. "A volatile economy, more frugal consumers, and a lack of financial backing have made it a difficult business environment for independent restaurants," said NPD's Greg Starzynski.
