A Missouri judge ruled Friday that a new state law banning teachers and students from communicating online infringes on teachers' freedom of speech. The judge placed an injunction on a provision of the law, preventing it from going into effect until February. The law, scheduled to be enforced beginning this week, now is expected to be revised by the state legislature with input from educators. The lawmaker who drafted the law said a new version likely will allow districts to make their own decisions regarding online contact between students and teachers.
