Data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey showed that the number of 5- to 13-year-old children hospitalized for mental illnesses jumped more than 80% -- from 156 to 283 per 100,000 children -- between 1996 and 2007. During the same period, hospitalizations for mental illness increased from 683 to 969 per 100,000 adolescents and from 921 to 996 per 100,000 adults. Meanwhile, the cases declined from 978 to 808 per 100,000 people 65 and older.
