North Carolina officials confirmed Monday that a horse in Halifax County was euthanized after contracting Eastern equine encephalitis, the first equine case in the state this year, and state veterinarians in Wisconsin have confirmed two cases of the mosquito-borne illness there. The number of cases of EEE, which can be prevented by a vaccine, vary widely from year to year; North Carolina saw six reported cases last year and 23 in 2009, said state veterinarian David Marshall.
