Near-field communications technology is expected to reach roughly 17.5 million smartphones by the end of the year, which would be up from an April forecast of 11.5 million, according to Pyramid Research. Analysts say wireless carriers have yet to show a keen interest in the technology because they have not figured out how to make money from NFC chips, which are used for mobile payment services.
