In 2004, 15-year-old Jeanna Giese became the first known human to survive rabies after showing symptoms of the disease, thanks to the highly experimental "Milwaukee protocol" designed by Dr. Rodney Willoughby Jr. Since then, five other people have survived the disease after being placed into comas designed to give their bodies a chance to fight off the infection, but some cases have resulted in severe brain damage and paralysis, which has prevented mainstream medicine from adopting the protocol.
