GOP lawmakers are resisting Democratic efforts to extend a payroll tax cut. Republicans argue the tax cut, which reduces workers' Social Security contributions by 2 percentage points, would needlessly add to the federal deficit; Democrats, meanwhile, accused their counterparts of hypocrisy. "If they oppose it they are for tax cuts for the rich but not for the middle class," says Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.
