A review of 38 studies found obesity was strongly associated with poor executive functioning, such as planning and decision-making skills, which could make it difficult for obese people to lose weight. Obesity, like anorexia nervosa, might be better treated as a brain condition, rather than as lifestyle disease, the researchers wrote in Obesity Reviews. Cognitive remediation therapy may also be helpful for obese individuals, researchers said.
