Several scientists and startup companies are tapping into the possibility of collecting atmospheric carbon dioxide and combining it with hydrogen for fuel uses, but the process requires a large amount of energy. The Department of Energy's Sunshine to Petrol project is focused on using solar power to create hydrocarbon fuel by recycling carbon dioxide. "We believe our approach will be the key to cost-effective transformation of greenhouse gases to fuel on a global scale," said Byron Elton, president and CEO of startup Carbon Sciences, which is also doing research on the subject.
